Ignition

The Different Parts of Your Chevrolet’s Ignition

The ignition system in your Chevrolet is responsible for starting the engine by creating a spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the engine’s cylinders. There are various parts of the ignition system.

1. Ignition Coil

The ignition coil is a crucial component that transforms low-voltage electrical power from the battery into high-voltage power which is then sent to the spark plugs.

2. Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are small but essential parts that deliver high-voltage electricity from the ignition coil to the engine’s cylinders.

3. Distributor

In older ignition systems, a distributor is used to distribute high-voltage electricity from the ignition coil to each spark plug in the correct firing order. Now, most vehicles often use coil-on-plug systems, eliminating the need for a distributor.

4. Ignition Control Module

This module, also the Ignition Control Unit (ICU), manages the timing and duration of the spark to ensure it occurs at the exact moment for optimal engine performance.

5. Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS)

In modern systems, this is used to determine the position of the crankshaft and the position of each piston in the engine.
